The Great Houdini

In the time it took me to spread hummus on a piece of bread and cut it into bite-size pieces Little Miss Penelope managed to secretly climb up her high chair, put her legs in the holes and sit down. When I turned around to the sound of her banging her fists on the table and asking for food, I questioned whether I was having a pre-alzheimer's moment and had just forgotten that I had placed her in there, or if she had really figured it out on her own.

What will she figure out next?

Cousin' Trouble

What do you get when you mix two toddler cousins?

Trouble with a captial T!

Aww, look. DeDe is showing Penelope how to play the piano.

What beautiful music you two make!

Then here comes Cade, ready to get in on the action too. All is good and well until...

"Hey Cade!"

"What Penelope?"

"Did you know this part up here moves?"

"No Penelope! Don't close the lid on Cade's fingers!"

Penelope was ecstatic to find that her same four-wheeler also lived at DeDe's and Poppy T's house.

Then somebody had the brilliant idea to let Cade and Penelope ride on it together.

"Hey Cade, I'll hold on tight to your shirt so I won't fall."

"Good idea, Penelope."

"No, Cade. Let's go this way. Let me take the wheel."

"Watch out, Penelope!"

Thanks to Poppy T's quick intervention that one didn't end too badly.

Cade and Penelope were always finding things to get into. One morning we found the two of them had snuck into DeDe and Poppy T's room and were busy experimenting with the CD player. Don't worry. We caught them right before either of them stuck their fingers in the outlet.

We spent one morning at the Children's Museum in downtown Houston. Cade and Penelope had a fabulous time exploring the tot room.

This was my favorite part--a life-size version of a Lite Brite toy.

Both Cade and Penelope liked playing with the doors that were just their size. Penelope was confused every time she opened the door only to find herself staring back at her own image in the mirror.

Ding-dong. Anybody home?

I really like this picture of Penelope playing with the dollhouse. I like to look at it and pretend that I actually have a serene, angelic child.

I was eventually able to convince Penelope to sit down and have a tea party with me.

"Thank you for this delightful cup of tea, Mother."

Cade saw what we were up to and wanted to join in. Penelope wasn't too sure about sharing tea with a boy.

"Uh, Penelope."

"Yes, Cade."

"Your mommy is tricking you. There really isn't any tea inside of here."

"Yeah, Cade. I think you're right."

All of the other children went down the slide. Penelope was adament about only going up it.

"Um, Penelope. I think that girl was in the firetruck first."

"No, boys. You've got it all wrong. You've got to push the break before you turn on the ignition."

"C'mon Cade. I've had enough. Let's quit this joint."

And then there was little cousin Ella.

Just sittin' pretty watching the world go by.

(But don't you put that girl down or hold her the incorrect way, or she'll let you know who's boss.)

The last day we tried to get a group picture of all of us. Later on, when I looked at the (failed) pictures more closely I realized Penelope and Ella were having some interesting interactions while the photographer was snapping away.

"Hey, Ella. Your headband seems to be a little crooked. Let me help you with that. And why does your mama make you wear those things anyways?"

"Thanks Penelope. It was gettin' kinda itchy."

"Wow Ella, you sure have chubby cheeks."

"Hey! Don't go dissin' my cheeks, Penelope. My daddy says they're cute."

"Nice, baby Ella."

"Hey Penelope! I may be a baby now, but just wait until we see each other next year. You'd better watch out..."

Cousin Pool Party

Thank goodness for DeDe and Poppy T's pool!

We spent some good cousin time poolside on our stay-cation in Houston (well, a 2 1/2 hour flight didn't really amount to a 'stay-cation' for us, but it was for the rest of the fam).

Late July in Houston is hot, HOT, HOT! The only place you can stand to be besides your air-conditioned house or car is in the pool.

Look! We've only been out of the pool for two minutes and we're already glistening with sweat.
our sweaty little family

To keep cool Penelope spent some quality time in her floating contraption--what a great invention!

Group photo gone awry.

Little Ella had the best seat in the house.

Poppy T joins the gang for some fun in the sun.

DeDe with her grandgals.

Isn't that the sweetest little thing you ever did see?

Penelope was surprised every time her daddy came up from under the water.

In spite of the heat index, Penelope preferred sitting out of the water in this little wagon and watching the action below. She even let Cade join her on a few occasions.

Time for a little swing. (Penelope used to be lulled to sleep by this swing when she was an infant; now it just gets her riled up.)

I really hope Penelope wasn't contemplating giving her Poppy the finger just then.

And here she is back in the wagon marking her territory.
"You all can have your pool fun. This wagon is mine!"

Hooray for Cousins!

We just got back from a week in Houston with T.J.'s family. Even though we had only been back in the U.S. just over a week before we packed up and took off for Texas, it was such a fun, relaxing time that we were glad to put our to-do lists out of our minds temporarily and enjoy the time with family.

Thanks to the oil spill our family vacation was moved from the beach at Gulf Shores to poolside at the family homestead in Houston. We had a great time being together just the same, and of course the kids didn't know the difference.

The big event of the trip was meeting Penelope's cousin Ella for the first time.

T.J.'s sister Lindy and baby Ella
It was hard being away in Germany and not getting to meet Ella when she was born back in April. But we tried to make up for lost time by covering her in kisses and cradling her in our arms every chance we got.

Ella has the sweetest face and is on her way to making arm rolls in fashion.

Penelope was very excited to meet her new cousin, but she wasn't quite sure what to make of her.

Penelope kept trying to give her hugs and kisses, which Ella wasn't too fond of.

And this little cutie is Ella's big brother Cade.

Cade and Penelope hadn't seen each other since last summer when Penelope was just a baby. Boy have things changed since then! They were good friends in no time--and in no time up to no good. (More on the adventures of Cade in Penelope coming soon.)

DeDe and Poppy T (or whatever their 'names' will evolve into) were only too happy to have all of their grandchildren in one place.

We tried really hard to get all three cousins to sit for a picture. Who were we kidding?

After take 154 we finally had a winner.

We also inforced a cousin dress code for the girls.

Even DeDe got in on the act.

Beach or not, we had a wonderful, relaxing week. Cousins make vacations so much fun!

goodbye kisses for Uncle Matt
